Digital Subscriber Line (DSL)is
an always-on Internet connection that can be used over
your home or business telephone line. A DSL modem (technically,
a bridge or a router) connects to your computer or network
and to your telephone line, giving you a constant connection
to the Internet at ultra-fast speeds. The connection
allows both data and voice to be transferred over the
same telephone line.
xDSL (Digital
Subscriber Line) is designed to run over copper -
the existing infrastructure into the home. The x refers
to the many sub-branches of DSL technology; the most
widespread selection is
ADSL (Asynchronous DSL) protocol is designed to run
with higher downstream speeds - data travels faster
from the network to the premises. This is especially
suitable for the Internet because the most popular use
is browsing
SDSL
(Symmetric DSL) is another of the xDSL family gaining
recognition, particularly with operators seeking to
expand in the SME sectors. SDSL is a dated protocol
compared to ADSL and is expected to be succeeded by
a newer version - HDSL2.
Unlike
ADSL, the SDSL protocol works symmetrically - that is,
the speed is the same to and from the network. It is
therefore more coordinated to businesses that need to
transmit, as well as receive, great sum of information.
