Frame Relay is a data protocol. Specifically
it's a network access protocol, which means that it
takes additional protocols, like Internet Protocol (IP),
IPX and just about every other protocol you can think
of, and summarize them with Frame Relay headers and
trailers for protocol and network uniformity. The Frame
Relay protocol has been specifically designed to transport
huge and variable amounts of data at "reasonably
high speeds" very competently.
Frame relay is an extremely efficient data transmission
technique used to send digital information such as voice,
data, local area network (LAN), and wide area network
(WAN) traffic quickly and cost-efficiently to many destinations
from one port. It is especially effective for the busty
traffic typical of most LAN interconnection applications.
